What’s the difference between drapes and curtains?

There are a few subtle differences between drapes and curtains. They each suit different needs and aesthetics, and it’s important to choose the right one for your home.

Curtains

Curtains are lighter than drapes and are usually moved by pulling with your hands instead of using a pulley system. They are more informal than drapes and work well in a casual environment. They don’t usually use linings to keep them lightweight, but there are exceptions.

Curtains are a great choice for vacation homes. Glass doors that lead to the pool or beach usually see a lot of traffic, so being able to open and close them quickly is very convenient. Also, not having a mechanism that can easily be damaged by a child eager to run outside is also a plus.

Drapes

Drapes are heavier and more formal and elegant than curtains. They almost always use linings, which can be useful in a variety of scenarios. Different linings can be used for waterproofing, insulation, light reduction, and soundproofing.

Drapes are pleated and heavy, and they are moved using a pulley mechanism instead of pulling them directly. The pleated design and heavier materials are very useful to prevent sounds escaping from your room, which is good for privacy, especially useful in the master bedroom. They excel at sound insulation, which is why recording studios often use them to help with acoustics. The pleating helps catch the sound waves and keep them inside the room. In colder weather, they are a very enticing option since they provide a good deal of insulation as well.

Designers find drapes better suited for houses with a formal and elegant style in mind. However, that isn’t always the case, and regardless of the popular convention, the final decision is always up to you.
